FAQ 1: Cleaning & disinfection

What cleaning/disinfection solutions are safe for scleral lenses?  What solutions are safe to use with Hydra-PEG coating?

PF--->preservative-free

MPS--->multipurpose solution

All scleral lenses should be cleaned and disinfected daily. Disinfectant solutions include hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants such as Clear Care Triple Action, Clear Care with Hydra-Glyde, and MPS such as Boston Simplus, Unique pH and Tangible Clean. Scleral lenses should never be stored in saline as it is not a disinfectant.

Fresh disinfection solutions must be used every day  NEVER RE-USE A DISINFECTING SOLUTION.  All solutions should be kept in their original containers. Do not transfer disinfection solutions into travel-size bottles. Empty travel size toiletry bottles are intended for shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, etc., but not for disinfectants.

Disinfectant solutions safe for all types of scleral lenses including those with Hydra-PEG coating are Boston Simplus, Unique pH, Clear Care Triple Action, Clear Care with Hydra-Glyde and Tangible Clean. Any other care solutions not listed should be considered incompatible with the Hydra-PEG coating and will run the risk of damaging or destroying the coating. Some people have reported Clear Care with Hydra-Glyde leaves a film on their lenses or causes their sclerals to become foggy but it will not damage the Hydra-PEG coating.

Always rinse lenses with PF saline before applying them onto your eyes following disinfection. MPS contain preservatives along with other chemicals and need to be rinsed off.  Even with neutralized Clear Care or plain peroxide, some scleral lens specialists recommend rinsing prior to applying them onto the eyes.
